The Captivating Village Development Program helps out-of-school girls catch up on learning before they go back to school. One of those girls is Keena*

Keena is a fourteen-year-old girl who came from a family of seven that depends on its survival on their father’s daily wages as a fish vendor and their mother’s salary as a daily wage laborer. In a family of as many as seven members, these sources of income are barely enough to survive, let alone send their children to school.

None of Keena’s four sisters were able to attend school, as this is not considered a top priority by not only her family, but also her community. When she joined CVP, she took good advantage of the opportunity and studied hard at the Learning Center. Every day, she tried her best to show up because opportunities like these are rare for a girl like her.

All her hard work paid off because she was able to complete her learning sessions for 10 months. It turns out that a lot can change even in under a year. Because of her perseverance, she now speaks with more confidence in front of other people. She also learned about personal care and women’s health, specifically menstruation and hygiene—a topic that was never openly discussed in her community before. She also learned about her rights as a citizen. As she learned how to care more about herself, Keena was also taught to care for the environment and her immediate community. She now understands the basics of local government and the common issues faced by people in her community—from floods to seasonal diseases.

Now enrolled in third grade, CVP provided her with school uniforms and school supplies. Her parents no longer need to worry about these expenses, as the gaps have significantly narrowed in her favor. She now attends school every day and is having the best time! She even says,

“I, my parents and family did not believe that one day I will go to school like other friends, but this day has come when I am now going to school regularly. Our dream has come true, and it has made a big difference in my life. I would like to thank this project team from the bottom of my heart for their support.
