Overcoming Challenges through Perseverance

Qujiangtso (35) is a single mom who lives in a nomadic tent far from the city with her son and family. Because of poor living conditions, Quijangtso and her brother weren’t able to go to school. As such, it has been difficult for them to seek employment as well.

Quijangtso joined the Husky Energy Tailoring Skills Program for Women in 2019. She had to travel 20 kilometers every day just to attend the training. But she did not waiver and never missed a single day.

“It was not easy for me to participate in the training, but I really want to learn this skill so I can use it to reduce our family’s financial burdens.

I learned very slowly at first but my my efforts paid off. After four months of training, I was able to make Tibetan and Mongolian clothing on my own. I applied in the teacher’s clothing factory for my two-month internship and learned more practical skills. There wasn’t any salary during the internship period but I was happy to work under my teacher’s guidance and improve my skills further. I was offered to continue working in the factory after my internship. However, I could only work at home so I could also take care of my parents and the children while my brother and sister-in-law are working outside.

Thankfully, my teacher was kind enough to let me take orders and make the clothes at home, then hand them over to the factory to sell once finished. I have also started to take private orders, and sometimes set up my own stall during large-scale events in the community.”

One year since Quijangtso graduated from the program and started working, she still makes and sells clothes.

“I am very happy that all my efforts during the training paid off. I won’t give up this job and will continue to work hard for my family. Thank you for helping and giving this kind of opportunity to poor women like me.”

Thank you to Husky Energy for fully funding this project.
