The Pigs That Helped Jituo’s Children Stay in School: A Follow-up Visit

Our Pig Farming program aims to increase families’ overall income and ensure they can sustainably support their children’s education and well-being. We hope the families can earn a profit of CNY 5,000 to 8,000 [USD 700 to 1,120] per year from the pig business.

Jituo Moseniu is the head of a humble and hardworking family. She has three children: the eldest daughter who dreams of becoming a preschool teacher in Guangyan, the second-born son who is in 5th grade, and her youngest son in third grade. Despite not being able to complete her studies, Jituo is determined to give her children the life she wishes to have had herself.

To support her children, Jituo had been farming for a living, which made the annual family income 20,000 yuan (USD 2,824.) On their farm, they grew corn, green peppercorns, potatoes, and sweet potatoes—which they also consume as their staple foods. More than that, she also raises 11 pigs, 4 cows, and 4 chickens. Her children’s tuition fees amount to CNY15,000 per year, and the remaining CNY 5,000 is for their household expenses. Despite all her hard work all year round, it is not enough for Jituo to support her children with her present resources.

When we arrived at her home on a follow-up visit, Jituo was at home with her eldest daughter and youngest son. We went to see where the piglets were raised and we saw a tidy pigsty where piglets pleasantly laid around.

During the interview, we found out that Jituo Moseniu does not understand Mandarin, so her eldest daughter translated her thoughts for us. The last time we saw her, we provided her with two piglets to add to her pen. We also learned that among the 11 pigs they raised, one of them had just given birth to 8 piglets. Compared to the piglets born from the family’s sow, they prefer the ones we provided because they are easier to raise. Now, the piglets are fed three times a day and have already reached 60 jin (about 30 kg)—a very good weight for this livestock. The daughter is also very fond of the two piglets, especially since she has been feeding them almost every day during her summer vacation.

Jituo expressed her deep gratitude to Captivating International, its partners, and donors. She plans to sell one of the grown pigs to increase the family’s income and alleviate their financial burdens, while the remaining will be kept as the family’s food supply for the year.
