Lusheng is a reed pipe wind instrument which is popular with the Miao minority, Dong ethnic groups in southwestern China. Play and dance using this instrument is one of the Miao nationality traditional culture activities and has been done for more than two thousand years. As more and more of the Miao young people leave their home villages to go out to work and study, people who master the lusheng are becoming fewer and fewer. So in order to keep the lusheng culture, the lusheng team from Daxi community picked out 5 young people to join the team through advertising to refresh the team members since most of them are senior people.
The team is currently composed by 10 farmers from our two project villages in Kaili county. Pan Yingming and Yang Shengliang are responsible for the organization and teaching. The rest of the team members are also skilled with Lusheng but they seldom practice. The team decided to take 1-2 days per week to practice and enhance this valuable skill. The village leaders hope this development will improve the young people’s playing skill and raising their interest on lusheng and continuing interest in the Miao culture.
