Yang Ha Miao and her husband live with their aging mother and two grandsons in a small and empty wooden house. One grandson is studying in grade one in Daxi primary school. The other one is studying in the Daxi school kindergarten. This family is tight, especially when someone gets sick. Any medical treatment is beyond what this family can afford.
When the Captivating village development project came to Duoji Village, the local implementation partner (Heifer China) helped Yang purchase 4 head of pigs with gift money of RMB 6000. Through well designed training, Yang has mastered pig raising techniques and the treatment of common animal diseases. She is able to vaccinate the pigs and expel parasites on her own. Also, her marketing awareness has improved.
In only one and a half years, the family sold eight heads of pig and their annual income is RMB 18,000, they successfully passed on the gift money to the next family on time. The family plan to rebuild their house and buy a refrigerator. Yang’s grandsons are growing and she hopes that the pig raising business continues to go smoothly then her son and daughter-in-law would be able to come back home to give them a hand and be able to tutor their children’s study.
Yang was selected as a self-help group leader. This group is aimed to build up social capital so that vulnerable poor farmers can be more resilient and sustainable. Yang is so happy to see her own family is changing together with the whole community.
