Husky Shangga Village Running Water Project – 12 months on and going strong!

It has been over a year since the completion of the Husky Energy Shangga Village Running Water Project. Carrie, Captivating’s Project Manager, says the new water system is working well and is significantly improving the daily lives of 92 families, including 120 students and teachers.

When asked about how the water project has impacted her life, Danmarjyid said it has provided many benefits. “My family never had a donkey to load water and my back got injured during our house construction,” she said.

“In the past, I always had to get my daughter and little son to fetch water by walking a long way down the mountain to the water spring. This was especially dangerous in winter, and very time consuming. Now, they do not have to worry about it. It’s wonderful that my husband and our elder son can focus on generating income for the family, instead of at least one of them having to stay to help fetch water with the children. Our kids are now in school full time, and our family income is getting better.”

Another woman said she cannot express enough thanks for how the water system has improved her daily life. “It has been such a relief to my daily burden,” said a joyful Lhamotso. “I do not have to go down to the valley and fetch water while worrying about my mother-in-law in bed. I also do not have to pile up all the dirty diapers to take to the valley to wash them, or wait for next water-fetching opportunity.”

“The water project has helped me to save time, improve my family’s hygiene, and reduce the health hazards from storing rain and well water. Most importantly, my daughters do not have to help me to fetch water or look after their grandmother while other kids are at school on time.”

At Captivating, we are full of gratitude for Husky Energy’s support of this project. It’s working well, and the village is moving forward thanks to the positive impact it is having. Families are now also growing significantly more vegetables in the summer months due to the availability of water. This has the double benefit of increasing their consumption of nutritious food, while also saving them money they normally spent at the market. This all helps our ultimate goal of keeping kids in school for longer.
