Emergency Response towards Terai's Fire Victims
Captivating Nepal supported the families affected by a fire in the Terai region last May.
Many families in countries like Nepal are only one natural disaster away from extreme poverty. Since August 24, several areas in Nepal have been experiencing heavy rains and landslides in multiple locations. One of those areas is Lekharka, Shailung Rural Municipality, situated 3,000 meters above sea level. Its citizens had their homes destroyed by the rains, and local authorities reported that around 100 families and 27 homes were annihilated by the rains.
On September 21, our team at Captivating Nepal coordinated with local authorities and the NGO Federation of Nepal Kathmandu to respond quickly to the victims despite the risky travel due to terrible weather and high altitude. The situation was more dire when we got there: the whole area was swept away by landslides, and around 65 families were displaced with no temporary shelter. Moreover, there was no electricity or potable drinking water facility nearby. We cannot imagine how terrible the locals must have felt as the rains kept pouring weeks before.
We acted fast by helping residents move into an area approximately one hour away from their local community. We distributed roofing sets to 27 families and gave out relief goods to all those affected. We cannot stop these heavy rains from happening, but we can help safeguard the citizens from the dangers caused by natural disasters. These roofs are known to be durable so hopefully, they will withstand more rain in the future.
Just recently, we heard back from our partners that there was another heavy downpour during the last week of September through the first week of October. We are committed to helping this community so we are currently working on relief efforts to help the residents get back on their feet.

While Janani (not her real name) delivered her baby at the public hospital, she was found to be infected with COVID-19. She was then kept in isolation while her husband was unable to see her and their newborn for two weeks. Due to the medical expenses, all their family's savings were depleted.
Throughout the Nepal lockdown, 3 Angels Community Radio has been continuously helping communities through informative radio programming as well as distribution of basic necessities such as food and clothing.
Can you imagine sleeping on the ground, having an empty stomach and listening to your children crying because they are hungry. Can you imagine your tiny home with muddy floors filled with mosquitoes and flies and then on top of all that, dealing with the rainy and cold season and not being able to escape the rain coming through your “...
I work in remote villages where Captivating has helped to provide blankets and warm clothes. I work for 3 Angels Nepal (3AN) and it was my job to distribute these blankets and shawls to remote earthquake affected places. These women and their babies are living with just tin over their heads since the April earthquake and are now open to the severe winter elements.
It has been 8 months since the devastating earthquakes occurred in Nepal. We all witnessed in the media the immense devastation and the desperate need of the Nepali people. It was everywhere we looked and we all helped in many different ways. Since then however, we have gone back to our daily lives and many of us have forgotten the pictures,...
