30 underprivileged women in rural Western China are getting excited about their opportunity to attend the next My First Job Assistant Chef Training Program. This successful program will see them move from being "furthest from employment" to earning stable incomes - many for the first time in their lives.

Preparations for the 2021 Tailoring Program

Right now preparations are well underway for the 4th Husky (now part of the Cenovus group of companies) Tailoring Program for Women, Qinghai Province, China. Chosen from among many applicants, 30 women from underprivileged backgrounds will eventually be selected as the next group to commence their training.

Easing the Family's Burden

Drolmatso, 27, lives with her family of seven members in a remote area. She mostly stays home to take care of the household, look after their children and send them to school, and assist her elderly in-laws. They solely depend on her husband and the income he earns from his part-time jobs. Because of this, Drolmatso wishes to learn a new skill which she can use to earn a living and help lessen her husband's burden of supporting the whole family.

A Restaurant Owner in the Making

Womokyid, 29, lives in the province with her family and aging parents. When she was younger, her father had an accident at work leaving him unable to work. Because of this, Womokyid had to stop school so she can help her mother take care of her father and earn income for their family. Now that she has a family of her own, her desire is to start a small restaurant of her own so can take care of her family while also earning a stable income.

Fujie, 44, is a single mother. She raised her son alone after her husband has left home many years ago. Her biggest regret was not being able to send her son to school to complete his studies. She hopes to be of help in any way she can.

Overcoming Challenges through Perseverance

Quijangtso first applied in the Husky Energy Tailoring Skills Program for Women in 2019 with the recommendation of the project coordinator and teachers. Faced with a lot of challenges, Quijangtso did not back down and continued to persevere.
