OMY: Mose to Become A Doctor
Mose, a bright and determined student, dreams of becoming a doctor after witnessing her illiterate parents face discrimination at a hospital.
Pengmotso entered the My First Job Assistant Chef Program in November 2019. She shares her story and her recent achievements with us.
“Ever since I was a child, I have longed to become a qualified chef. I never had the opportunity to go to school. Without education, I am not able to secure a good job. I want to give my 3 children a good education with opportunities for a bright future, but all this was out of reach for me.
When I joined the My First Job Assistant Chef program last year, I thought all my stars aligned. I knew this was my opportunity to make my dreams come true.
When my training and internship was complete, I saw a recruitment poster in a restaurant. They were looking for an assistant chef. They were offering good salary, food, accommodation, and annual bonus. There was really no reason for me not to try and apply since the restaurant was close to my home. I felt like the job was especially tailored for me.
When I got home, I called the restaurant to ask for more details and an interview was arranged for me. I was nervous but happy at the same time. After I finished the interview, the head chef asked me to make a dish for him. He was impressed with the way I cook saying that I was very professional and organized. He was also very satisfied when he tried the dish and I was hired on the spot!
I have been working in the restaurant for more than a month now, and have begun to adapt to the working environment. I mostly help the head chef buy the ingredients and prepare them for the next day. I also set up the utensils and assist him in any way I can while he cooks. The work seems very simple but it’s also challenging at times. There are instances when I get the ingredients wrong because the labels are in Chinese. Thankfully, my boss and the head chef are so kind to teach me and help me learn Chinese.
Now, both my husband and I have stable jobs and have started saving up money. This brought a lot of change in our family, not only in our finances but also in the way we get along at home. My children are studying hard and my husband is full of energy and positive outlook.
I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to learn. I’ve gained a lot of experience as well as friends while in the My First Job program. Because of your kindness and encouragement, I am more confident and determined to make my dream come true. When you are free, you are most welcome to our restaurant for dinner. Thank you again!”
Thank you to ZURU and 11th Charity Auction for funding this program. Currently 103 women, in 4 different areas, are concluding their internships.
