PCH International – investing in tomorrow’s leaders – Capacity Building Project

Fighting poverty is not easy. It’s expensive, time consuming, ever-present. But one thing is certain – investing in the next generation through education is a key long-term strategy. For PCH International and Captivating, this has taken the form of a specialist Capacity Building Program targeting University level students – a program focused specifically on skilling up tomorrows leaders in social justice, program investigation, proposal writing, and program implementation and management. We see these scholars as tomorrows poverty ambassadors, and our aim is to help them transition their interests and ideas into one day becoming change management leaders and implementer’s.

In April 2014, 25 smart and motivated Qinghai based scholars (all presently attending university) were interviewed and accepted in a 6 month program. The final assessment for each student was the presentation of an in-depth and well researched poverty proposal addressing an issue relevant to their home villages. Five of the best students won internship scholarships with locally registered NGO’s in Qinghai, with four of these proposals winning funding for future implementation by local supporters. We are thrilled to have PCH International partnering with us through this new work – a program which we hope will become on ongoing part of our annual activity in Western China (hopefully run each semester as per the request by Professors, teachers and NPO’s involved with the program).

Building future leaders, thanks to PCH

25 university level students from rural, poor families in Western China, participated in the 2017 PCH Capacity-Building Leadership program. Their families have already sacrificed so much to get them to university and are quite possibly in debt for the rest of their lives.
