Team Building Strengthens our Microfinance Team

One of our programs in the Philippines is the Microfinance Program which aims to provide micro loans to women to help them start or scale their small businesses. Our dedicated on-ground team has been meeting with Sam to reassess our Microfinance Program for the past weeks. Sam is our Australian volunteer who served as an army officer for 13 years and has expertise in Strategic Planning and Project Management. We looked at the program’s mission statement, read through the entire manual, and evaluated how the staff were doing during our discussions. We all agreed that one of our goals is to strengthen the bond of our staff, given that the program has been in close observation since last year. So our team planned for a two-day teambuilding with our microfinance staff.

Fun Team building Games

The teambuilding’s goal is to set the program’s clear direction, reinforce everyone’s role in the organization, and bond — to appreciate the staff’s perseverance and commitment to the organization. The first day was reserved for all the important group discussions. We updated the program objective to clearly state the Microfinance Program’s role in our preventive work. We emphasized our criteria for eligible borrowers to ensure the staff will follow 100% of this as they add new clients. We also shared the measures of success — repayment rate, interest collection, and new active clients added — which we will closely monitor over the next 6 months.

The second day of the team building was reserved for fun! We started the day with a sunrise walk and devotion led by Sam. He also prepared the team building activity where each group would have to work together to build ‘boats’ out of cardboard and tape to survive a trip in the pool. Laughs were shared as we talked about what worked, what didn’t, and the importance of working smartly together to achieve the goal of the game. We are grateful for Sam’s help in all this. We hope this teambuilding sparks more ideas on how to make the program more sustainable in the long run to help more Filipino women.
