Our Pig Farming Program aims to increase families’ overall income and ensure that they can sustainably support their children’s education and well-being. We hope the families can earn a profit of CNY 5,000 to 8,000 [USD 700 to 1,120] per year from the pig business.
Jisuo Jinshi (37) is a mother of four children and lives with her 43-year-old husband. To make ends meet, her husband works out of town 6 months a year for some labor work. For the rest of the year, they rely on their state-owned plot of land where they plant corn, sweet potatoes, and potatoes. They also used that space to take care of their livestock: 25 chickens, 11 pigs, and 9 piglets.

As we approached her home, we saw her sitting on the ground with a neighbor while skillfully working on traditional Yi embroidery. When she noticed us, she immediately set down her needlework to welcome us and warmly led us to the pigsty.
When we reached, we were met by a well-kept pen where two piglets ran up to her as soon as they saw her. Observing how they looked, the pigs were clean and had bright white coats. We know that Jisuo really took good care of them
She later opened up to us, “Before receiving support, I felt helpless and unable to contribute to my family’s income…But when I learned about this project and received the healthy piglets, I now see myself as an active part of improving our household.”
She continues, “The feed we received can’t even be bought in the market—it’s top quality. More importantly, through the training, I realized the importance of a clean environment for raising pigs. It used to be something we never thought much about.”
At first, she found it unbearable to clean the pen daily, but she did anyway. Later, she got used to it and no longer let another day pass without it being cleaned. Her hard work paid off because now, the pigs weigh over 60 jin (36 kg).
“Before, I just fed pigs wild grass. They never grew well. But thanks to the teacher’s advice, I now mix feed and cornmeal for the young ones. When they’re older, I’ll mix in chopped grass. That’s made all the difference.”

When we asked her about her plans, she said that she is hopeful. “I’m so grateful to the caring people from Captivating for choosing me. I’ll raise these pigs well and sell them for a good price. With that money, I’ll buy new piglets and keep raising more. The rest I’ll save for my children’s schooling.”
She added that her eldest child has been silently worried about the family’s finances and sometimes feels pressure because of it. So she told her, “Thanks to some very kind people, we now have a way to earn money. You don’t need to worry—just focus on your studies. Keep reading and learning, and one day you’ll leave the mountains and be someone who can help families like ours.”
