Our One More Year Scholarship Program (OMY) partners with Shenzhen Charity Federation to support 500 qualified girls (and some boys) for “One More Year” in senior high school. If they successfully meet the scholarship requirements, we will continue to support them until they graduate.
One of our scholars is Amo Jieruo* (17), one of the four children of a family residing in rural China. Her mother is a single mother trying to support all four of them on her own since her father died 10 years ago. Often, they barely make ends meet, yet her mother remains determined to send all of them to school because she believes that doors open when one is educated. Since she joined OMY, their family’s financial situation has eased, and she has shared a letter with us to share her experience.
“Greetings! I want to sincerely thank you for your continued care and support. Since I started high school, you have been quietly helping me in the background—both in my studies and daily life. Your support has greatly reduced the burden on my family.
My father passed away when I was young, and my mother has been raising the four of us on her own while also making sure we could all go to school. She used to work as a waitress in a restaurant, but she often fell ill and needed to buy medicine, which is a heavy financial burden for our family. However, ever since I entered high school, you have been providing me with support and supplies each semester. So here, I sincerely want to say to you: “Thank you! Because of you, I have felt warmth in my life.”
During high school, I faced setbacks and difficulties in my studies, and there have been times when I felt lost. But I know that only by persevering can I succeed and see the future. That’s why I never gave up and kept pushing forward. I’m an introverted person and not very talkative; I tend to do things on my own when it comes to studying and living. But no matter what, only by working hard can I get into my ideal university.
My goal is to be admitted to Xichang University. After graduation, I hope to find a good job and contribute to society in any way I can. I wish to study in a school with a good academic atmosphere.
As the college entrance exam approaches, I feel very nervous and anxious. I don’t know whether I can get into my dream school, but I am working hard and doing my best to prepare for the exam. In the future, when I have the ability, I also want to help more people get through difficult times, just like you have helped me.
